I served with Robert in Vietnam. We were friends. I still have a couple of photos of Robert when we were in country together.
I can recall the night when a Sargent came to our tent, to asked for volunteers to go on a mission. The volunteers would have to leave the base to retrieve a stalled vehicle before it could fall into the hands of the local V.C. Robert without hesitation raised his hand. When the Sargent asked for someone to ride shotgun for Robert, I raised mine. I thought we both were crazy going out alone at night. Robert said "let's go Jones'se", and got behind the wheel. I grabbed my M16 and was locked and loaded. As we left the base I tried to see ahead, around and in back of us as well as I could. Robert was focused and was shifting gears like there was no tomorrow, as he puffed away on his ever present cigarette. We were successful in completing our mission. It was a night I'll never forget. We were both awarded the Bronze Star for our service. I have not nor will I ever for Robert Duff.
