Obituary of John "Jack" Robert Kinney
John "Jack" Robert Kinney, 90, formerly of Auburn, NY, died on Tuesday, September 24, 2024 in Tiverton, RI.
He was born on December 2, 1933 in Syracuse, NY, a son of the late John Robert Kinney, Sr. and Dorothy Genevieve (Hogan) Kinney.
Jack was raised in Auburn NY and resided there until 2019, when his health declined and he moved to RI to be closer to his niece.
Jack graduated from East High School, Class of 1952. He attended Auburn Community College and received an Associates degree in Business. He worked as a Quality Control Technician for GTE Sylvania in Seneca Falls for a time and later worked as a Correctional Officer with the State Department of Corrections for nineteen years.
Jack enjoyed travel, took many cruises and celebrated his great-niece's baptism in France. He followed sports, especially Red Sox baseball and Notre Dame football, and was always eager to catch a game and keep up with the scores. He loved movies, especially Westerns, and it was hard to find one he had not seen before. He also had an amazing knowledge of world history, and was a civil war buff. Jack will be fondly remembered for many things, including his love of animals, breakfast, dessert, oysters and black licorice candy.
Survivors include a sister, Carol (Kinney) Starowicz (late Thaddeus Starowicz)Palmyra, VA., two nieces: Sharon Starowicz (William Maatsch) of Bristol, RI and Cynthia Borcherding (Brooks) of Greenwich, CT; two great-nieces: Ashton Borcherding and Helena Borcherding; and a great-nephew, Leyton Borcherding; cousin, Robert McCarthy of Auburn, NY; and many other cousins and extended family from the Auburn area. He is also survived by his loving companion, Marlene Rigby of Auburn, NY.
The family wishes to thank the healthcare staff at Brookdale Sakonnet Bay, where Jack resided for the past five years, and the Visiting Nurse Home & Hospice staff for their care and loving compassion of Jack in his final days.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, October 1, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church celebrated by Stephen Karani, Pastor in Auburn, NY. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Auburn.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 30, 2024 at Farrell's Funeral Service, 84 South St., Auburn, NY.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Jack's memory may be given to the St. Alphonsus Food Pantry, 90 Melrose Road, Auburn, NY 13021.
