Obituary of Eugene J. Gleason
Mr. Eugene J. Gleason, 94, a former resident of Havens Avenue, and a lifelong resident of Auburn, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2016 at the Auburn Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
A son of Joseph E. and Frances M. Murphy Gleason, he was a veteran of World War II; a retired 40 year U.S. Mail carrier, and a graduate of Syracuse University in civil engineering. He retired at the age of 89 from his company Gleason Land Surveyors Company.
He was a graduate of Auburn East High School with the class of 1939, a member of the V.F.W., Ancient Order of Hibernians, a 55 year member of Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, and St. Mary’s Church, Auburn. During World War II he was a U.S. Marine, serving in the Wing Service Squadron in the Pacific Theater, earning five Battle Stars.
His wife, Margery Ryan Gleason predeceased him in 2010, and two sons, Dennis Gleason in 1983, and Thomas Gleason in 2002.
Surviving children are Eugene (Diane) Gleason Jr., of Tucson, Ariz., James (Janice) Gleason, of Huntsville, Ala., and Margaret (Michael) Nugent, of Endicott, N.Y.; daughter-in-law, Kitty Gleason, of Clifton Park, N.Y.; grandchildren, Sean (Kathy) Gleason, Thomas (Christina) Gleason, Patrick (Wendy) Gleason, and Christopher (Dawn) Gleason, and great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was also predeceased by a brother, Joseph Gleason, and sisters, Veronica Nervena, Ann Nervena, Mary Jacobs, and Ellen O'Hora.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11:15 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, 2016 in St. Mary’s Church, Auburn, with the Rev. Frank J. Lioi, Pastor as celebrant. Interment will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. The family will have calling hours from 9 to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday morning at Farrell’s Funeral Service, Inc., 84 South St., Auburn, prior to the funeral Mass.
