Obituary of Richard Edwin Carr
PORT BYRON — Richard Edwin Carr, 89, passed away Dec. 6, 2018 in Arizona. He was the son of the late Arthur Robison Carr and late Bernice Campbell Carr of Port Byron, New York, and brother of late Dorothy Carr Toney. An avid sportsman, he was an outstanding baseball player, basketball player, pilot and hunter, enjoying yearly trips to his Adirondack Brindle hunting club up to and including this year.
He was a graduate of Port Byron High School in 1948, SUNY Cortland in 1952 and did his graduate work at Syracuse University. During his studies at SUNY Cortland, he married his high-school sweetheart, Florence Marquart, who died in April 1985. After graduation, he became a teacher with the Cortland City School District, specializing in special education. summer driver's education and sports coaching were also to his credit.
Dick is survived by three of his four children: Denise Bradshaw (Anderson), Jennifer Carr and John Carr. Never forgotten is daughter Michelle April Carr, who passed away in June 2004. He adored his two grandsons, Anderson G. Bradshaw (Erin) and Richard S. Bradshaw; along with his beautiful great-grandchildren, Evelyn and Emerson Bradshaw. Dick had several nieces and nephews that fondly remember him as a very kind man. Some students enjoyed his dry humor as a driver's education instruction (We can play the radio!) and as coach for several sports, including junior varsity baseball and basketball.
In Cortland, calling hours will be held 3 to 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14, at the Wright-Beard Funeral Home, 9 Lincoln Ave.
In Auburn, calling hours will be held 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, at Farrell Funeral Service, 84 South St. A memorial service at the home will follow, with the Rev. Judith Selover, Pastor of the United Methodist Church of Port Byron, officiating. A spring interment will be held in Pine Hill Cemetery.
