Reverend James C. Enright

October 12, 1942- April 29, 2026

Father Jim Enright’s truly unique half century of priestly ministry in Auburn concluded Wednesday April 29th with his death at age eighty-three. Jim was born to Arthur J. and Winifred (Culliton) Enright on October 12, 1942 and grew up in Buffalo, New York. He was an advocate for civil rights and participated in the 1965 Selma, Alabama March. He was an alumnus of Canisius College and St. John Vianney Seminary. Jim was ordained to the priesthood on May 24, 1969. After his arrival in Auburn in 1972, Jim served at St. Alphonsus, St. Mary’s and Sacred Heart Churches. In 1978 Jim became the chaplain at the Auburn Correctional Facility. For many years he also served as chaplain for the Knights of Columbus and both the Auburn and Owasco Fire Departments. His gentle ministry touched the lives of individuals and families throughout the community. Well known for his eloquence in the pulpit and for his compassionate presence whenever needed, he was in so many ways a reflection of Pere Lacordaire’s description of the priesthood; “To be a member of every family, yet belonging to none; to share all sufferings; to penetrate all secrets, to heal all wounds; to bless and be blessed forever.”

Jim is survived by his sisters Katherine Bellet and Rosemary Enright as well as numerous nieces and nephews, and by his extended family, Mary Rita Lawler, Michael, Renee, Patrick, Sean, and Matthew Carbary. Jim was predeceased by his parents and three brothers, Joseph, John, and Thomas. He was also predeceased by his very good friends and mentors Monsignor James D. Cuffney and Father Paul Brennan

On Friday May 8th. 2026 at 11am his Funeral Mass will be held at Sacred Heart Church with the Reverend Michael Brown as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

The omission of flowers is suggested, with Memorials suggested to the Owasco Volunteer Fire Department.
