Obituary of Donald J. "Don" Callanan

Donald J. "Don" Callanan, passed away peacefully Sunday at The Commons on St. Anthony, surrounded by family. Don was born in Ossining, N.Y., the son of Joseph Michael Callanan and Luella Agnes DeMont Callanan. He was a graduate of Auburn West High School and Rochester Institute of Technology. He completed his college degree after proudly serving in the U.S. Army where he was stationed in Germany. His career began in Rochester, N.Y., with Burroughs Corporation. Promotions of succession occurred in Boston, Cincinnati, Rochester (N.Y.), Montreal (Canada), and Denver, where he eventually retired. He and his wife, Violet Del Santo Callanan, then returned to Auburn. Violet passed away November 19, 2015. They had celebrated 59 years of marriage. Don was a parishioner of St. Alphonsus Church since his retirement. He served as an Eucharistic Minister at mass, as well as Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, delivering to the homebound. He also served as Lector and Usher. A daily communicant of St. Alphonsus and Sacred Heart Church he lived his faith. Always humble, seeking to help others, and never asking for himself. He was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, Matthew House, and an advocate for Alzheimer's patients and families. Survived by his children, Terrance Patrick (Anne) Callanan, Fairport, N.Y., Patricia Anne (Rolf) Grell, Colorado Springs, Colo., Timothy Michael (Gayle) Callanan, Aurora, Colo., Kelly Jean (Michael) Rolling, Peoria, Ariz.; grandchildren, Ryan and Mark, Benjamin, Kelsey, Dustan, Rachael, Abigail, Brandon, and Kylie, Shannon, Kaitlyn, and Heather; and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; Vogel nieces and nephew, Cheryl, Cindy, and Bob (Chris); and great-niece and great-nephew, Chelsey and Adam, and their children. He was predeceased by his wife; and by his sister, Mary Callanan Vogel. Today, Thursday, January 23, 2025, his Memorial Mass will be held at St. Alphonsus Church at 1 p.m., with The Reverend Stephen Karani, Pastor, as celebrant. The family will greet friends from 12:30 to 1 p.m. prior to mass. Donations in his memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 225 N.
